Becoming an Outstanding Pastoral Leader

Created by leading professionals with senior pastoral experience, this intensive and fast moving one-day course prepares and supports new and potential pastoral leaders, who may or may not be teachers, for the complex and diverse challenges that face them in both primary and secondary schools. It also acts as a comprehensive development activity for those already working in this field.

This programme gives you the opportunity to:
  • Explore how to support vulnerable young people and their families in more effective ways whilst improving your own practice and learning;
  • Understand and meet the requirements to attain an ‘outstanding’ Ofsted judgement;
  • Develop the knowledge, skills and protocols necessary for successful pastoral intervention and support;
  • Become more confident and experienced in responding to a wide range of challenging issues;

  • The art of developing team cohesion;
  • Flexible leadership styles;
  • Discussing real-life scenarios;
  • Monitoring and tracking of student performance;
  • Managing inappropriate behaviour;
  • Dealing with conflict;
  • Supporting students with mental health issues;
  • Prevent Duty;

The Becoming an Outstanding Leader course will provide you with:
  • A clear understanding of what ‘Outstanding’ leadership of a pastoral team looks like and the next steps required to move towards it;
  • Increased confidence required to respond to a diverse range of challenging pastoral situations;

  • Clarity as to the contribution that pastoral teams can make in monitoring the academic performance of young people towards higher achievement;

Facilitator – Richard Brown

We are delighted to welcome Richard Brown as the facilitator on this course. With 18 years of senior leadership experience behind him, including two headship posts, Richard is well placed to lead the Becoming an Outstanding Pastoral Leader course. His pastoral experience is extensive; having previously held positions as Head of Year, Head of Key Stage, Director of Sixth Form, and Pastoral Deputy.
Richard’s training portfolio is equally broad. A facilitator and mentor on all 3 Leadership Curriculum programmes; NPQML, NPQSL and NPQH, he also presents at conferences, delivering keynotes and running workshop sessions. Involvement in supporting schools in Special Measures with intervention programmes together with writing and delivering bespoke programmes for leadership teams completes a diverse educational training background.
